There are many fake websites.

For example: There was E-Gold.com (It is actually E-Goid.com with capital i). It's not functioning now but couple of years it was functional. Also there was Hotemail.tk which looked like Hotmail.com

It's better idea for such big companies to register the typo domains so that others don't register it. For example, Paypal should register all paypla, pyapal etc for safety of their customers.

I like how gamil.com acknowledges the fact that most of their traffic is trying to get to gmail. Nice touch.

There is nothing illegal about it. If you own a high traffic site it is up to you to protect your sites brand by registering as many typos and misspells as you can think of. The internet is the wild west and it's all fair game. This has been going on for years with adult websites.
