Default Leaving your computer on

Those with wireless Internet- do you leave your computers on all the time? Are you worried about people getting access to files on your computer?

ANy computer can be accessed if left online, no matter it is wireless or not. You have to block the ports which hackers might use to get in.

How do I do that? I don't really keep anything of value on my computer, but the thought that someone could have access to my stuff disturbs me.

You can use some firewall to block hack attempts. A popular one is ZoneAlarm, it won't let anyone to enter in your PC. You can block all unused ports.

Yes Zonealarm is a good Firewall and should keep your connection secure.
However I prefer to switch my computer off if I am not using it.

ZoneAlarm is the best software I've found. I like how it asks you everything. I haven't seen any other programs that work the same way.

I never leave my computer on no matter what. I'm a penny pincher and I don't want to end up paying xxx-xxxx just for electricity and internet.

If you're using a router, you can use it as your firewall. You can assign specific PC mac addresses for instance to have access to your intranet. Also if you are not online better switch off your connection.
