You can never make it completely hacker free, you can make it harder for a hacker to get in, but there is almost always a way to get in.

It's very, very tough to get in if you use 128-bit encryption. That's 32 characters selected from 0-9,a,b,c,d,e,f that you'd have to guess in the right order. If you're talking about professional or government special interests wanting your info, they'll find an easier way to tap you instead. I hope you are never that "popular!"

These guys can give you much to consider.

Thank you,
entree-

Wireless router comes with many built-in encryption techniques, get yourself one of those router, like I've Linksys and establish a Encrypted network by using WEP 128 bit encryption.

jackman,

Yes, this is a great solution for most! I know, it is a little tedious to set up because every device (your computer, a handheld, etc) must have the 128bit (32 actual alphanumeric characters) entered in before being able to connect, but almost always those can be entered once and will be remembered by the device. No one will be able to sit outside your house and connect anymore! (unless they guess that code ).

Yes, Linksys ...and also Netgear, are excellent brands which have been in the business for a long time. I use both in my home network.

Thank you,

One other way is to set your router settings so that only designated mac addresses of PCs are allowed to get into your connection. Prior to that you have to note down the Mac addresses of your authorized PCs.

Aside from the suggestions above, you better switch off your router if not in use. For your home connection for instance, you can switch of at night or during the period when you expect nobody will use the internet connection.

And one more important thing. Change the default log in information of your router.
