Rep Power: 10 ![]() | With upwards of about 10 million people having an identity theft crime being committed against them in some form or another each year, each person should carefully examine what they are doing to prevent identity theft occurring. More often than not the answer will actually be that one is being careful and not watching others that cross their path carefully, however, there are some cases where people will take your identity right out from under you. Those are the situations that you need to be careful of and try to prevent. How does one define identity theft? Identity theft involves stealing one's bank account details, personal details like name, phone number, social security number, passport number, and even can include one's credit card details. A person who commits identity theft usually uses one's personal details for money. When they have a particular individual's personal details in hand they can rack up hundreds of dollars, if not thousands, in credit card debt as well as clear out his or her money in their bank account. Sadly, there are people who will go to great lengths to commit an identity theft crime; unfortunately, there are people who fall prey to this kind of a trap. There are several things that one can do to avoid this awful crime being committed against them. First, you can make sure that you have your internet security settings and personal firewalls turned to a high setting. In this way, hackers will not be able to travel through your computer to steal your identity. However, if you do not have a firewall installed on your computer you are blatantly open to Trojan Horses, Worms, and other viruses that those who commit identity theft use to track and steal a person's personal details. The information that they receive from the virus goes straight to their computer for the strict use of using it for identity theft purposes. Another way that you can prevent identity theft is to be careful who you give your credit card number, as well as bank account number and information, to. For example, do not just give it to anyone who asks for it but make sure you know the person before you give them your financial information. Not all people are on the internet for the best of intentions and you could just fall prey to one of the many people who mean to harm you through your bank account or credit card information if it is made available to them. In addition, there are other smaller ways that one can avoid identity theft outside of the internet. Don't leave a paper trail behind you, especially in your car. Take you checkbook with you and don't leave that sitting on your car dashboard, either, as that is a perfect and open ticket to anyone trying to steal money through your bank account. Take all of your ATM receipts so that no one can get your bank account or ATM card number. Even though asterisks are printed on ATM receipts instead of your actual account number, professional identity theft stealers can get a hold of that very information with the simple ATM receipt. All of the tools and precautions that you use will definitely go a long way in preventing identity theft against you. By using common sense, taking precautions on your computer as well as off your computer, you will make it all the more difficult for people who try to commit identity theft! |
