Default Paypal / Credit Card Chargebacks

I'm quite concerned about how the Paypal chargeback system works. It seems that the customer can wait a very long time to start the chargeback process, then the seller only has a few days to defend. Paypal sometimes just honour the chargeback, or lock funds in the paypal accont, then leave the seller to sort it out.

Is there any way to protect against this? The thought of having funds locked without warning is quite scary to me.

I have read bad feedbacks with regards to paypal chargebacks. If you would follow up on them they would just answer "It could be up to 75 days while we investigate this matter." PayPal don't just recognize the refund they issued. You need a lot of patience in this.

75 days is quite a large amount of time...PayPal will start loosing its customers if it continues to move at this pace

I sold a pinball machine on eBay once for someone else and the guy paid via paypal. When I sent him pictures too show that it was all packaged properly for shipping, he said something like...that's not the pinball machine I bid on...so he went to paypal...I had already deposited the money in my account and give it to the guy...$1300 as a matter of fact. I did make a nice cut from it..BUT the guy went to paypal and they reversed the money out of paypal account..totally froze my account..drained the rest of the funds I had in there. After 2 weeks of not really knowing how to handle it..He agreed to take the pinball machine for $900 instead. So the man understood that I needed some of the cash back to make the refund. Everything with paypal was fine as soon as I agreed to take the lower offer.

I feel like the guy knew he could do this with paypal and would have bid that pinball machine to $20,000 if that's what it took, knowing he could deal later on it thru paypal. He also threw his weight around by telling me he was a NYPD officer and he knew people. I still have his emails. I dunno why I keep them it has been over 2 years ago now.

It has it's ups and downs that's for sure.

I think you should write an email to PayPal people as they mention that they give even shipment tracking services to members and all that...YOu cant waste so much of money just like that man!!!

I think alot of their chargeback and refund system is based on user profile and their history. Especially if you are a "verified" member.

The best and easiest method is to contact your Credit Card company and ask them to do the chargeback. PayPal may/may not be able to recover funds but the bank will, as its the main authority who sends the money behind paypal.
