Default Paypal charges way too much fees

10% of the payment is transferred into their own account. It's extortionate.

Only if there's a rivaling company as big as theirs to compete with them.

No, google tried, amazon is trying, e-gold tried. They all failed. Even ebay tried to beat paypal in its day with BillPoint but failed. That said, for most people, the fees are pretty reasonable unless you are in a small country.

The challenge is that any service has to start with 1 user and by the nature of the service, it's only as strong as it's member base, so for anyone to come out any point afterwards would have a challenge as so many already use paypal. Even Google tried to offer services for $0 and it still had a challenge but paypal and google checkout are two different beast.

10% when?? I find paypal very comfortable to use. Even if they give 2-5% less exchange rates for any given currency, then they are providing you(atleast thriving to provide) with world class decent services

I haven't been charged 10% for getting payment. They only charge a percentage of payment (about 5%) + 30 cents, when you get credit card payments, in case your account is free.
Usually you receive payments without being charged, unless it's funded with a credit card.

The charges can't be that high until 10%. I wonder why people still chooses Paypal, maybe because it is the safest?
