Default VISA fraud protection

I recently bought an ipod online. I received a phone call from the merchant stating that they had a problem processing my credit card and they advised me to call VISA.

Called my bank, and they said that they put a hold on the order because they thought it was a fraudulent transaction. Now I shop online often, and that ipod barely cost $400. I asked why, but they gave me no real answer, something like ... for the security of your account etc etc. Now, i don't want to have to do this everytime i order something. Don't get me wrong, I like that VISA has this "feature", i just don't want to have people calling me everytime i make a purchase. If the merchant hadn't called me, i would have waited forever since VISA never advised me about the hold on my order.

I think it's a good feature that Visa offers. If I'm not mistaken, this doesn't happen everytime you place a large order online. It's happened to me once or twice, but not everytime I have ordered online. If it happened every time, I would get very annoyed.

It is a good feature, my capital one visa card is like that sometimes! They want verification of charges sometimes!

Y, i think its a very good feature provided with VISA . They just have to maintain the records for the security purposes.

You say you shop online often, but do you normally charge items at that high of a price? If a credit card company thinks a charge is out of your spending pattern they will flag it for your protection. American Express is really good for this, but they are just protecting themselves.

I have been a VISA credit card holder for over 3 years and I haven't facing any fraud or misuse matters in the period. However, I still think that VISA did a great job for provided this nice feature!

(ANS) No.1 Sadly your story is all to common & could literally happen to any of us who have a debit or credit card. (which is most of us).

No.2 YES! card fraud called "user NOT present" or "card holder not present" is the fastest rising type of crime committed over the web.

No.3 YES! inform the card company (visa, access, etc) ASAP! and have them cancel or block any further transactions on that specific card (card number). In effect no further funds can be taken off that card number, the card is then useless from then on.

No.4 YES! its standard practice to issue you the account holder with a new card but this is a hassle & usually takes anything from 1 week to 1 month to issue depending upon the company concerned.

Its a good way to reduce the chargebacks for visa. They are having separate Anti Fraud customer support team. If you purchase large amount of money in online. They will call and confirm the purchase. Then only they can avoid chargeback and find out the frauds.
