What's 3d secure?

3D Secure is the generic term for Visa and MasterCard's Payer Authentication programs. Individually they are called Verified by Visa and MasterCard SecureCode.

By becoming a Verified by Visa merchant Visa and your bank will lower your procesing rates. You will also no longer be liable for fraudulent related chargebacks.

By becoming a MasterCard SecureCode merchant you will also recieve a dramtically lower rate and eliminate yourself of fraudulent related chargebacks on enrolled cardholders.

How much of a decline? I use to hear about a service by visa but then I thought it died out. Doesn't it require a pin? I sell software so it's impulse a lot of I don't want to hurt that.

You can see the programs in action at other online software companies like Digital River and VioSoftware.com.

Enrolled cardholders need to submit the pin or password they created. Non-enrolled cardholders or cardholders who bank's aren't participating will not be prompted although in most instances you will not be liable, but it's relative to the card type. Both programs qualify you for the lowest possible ecommerce interchange rates so you will also start to save money on processing fees.

Verified by Visa: CPS eCommerce Preferred: between 5 and 10 basis point reduction (depending on the card type)

All orders will return a realtime response based on the coverage.

If you are a US based merchants your fraudulent Visa chanrgebacks will be blocked at the issuer. So if you recieve 3 a month related to fraud on your Visa transactions the month you implement this they will be gone.

MasterCard transactions need to be represented with the SecureCode data and then they will be reversed automatically.

There's a difference in how they operate because they're different associations.
