    Square

This new product that connects to the audio jack in your cell phone allows you to swipe and charge credit cards...on your phone! Awesome! If your business isn't just online and you do some transactions in person, this could come very much in handy. I know it will for me. Anyone else excited about it?

Is square the name of the product? Who is offering it? That is very interesting. I am curious as to what type of fee they will be charging per swipe for such convenience.

Its only for iOS device though. Its an invention from the same guy who created Twitter - Jack Dorsey

Yes, square is the name of the product. They take 2.9% of each transaction, but installing the software and getting the actual device only costs $1.

What a great idea! Will it work with prepaid phones, too? Does it use your minutes, or generate its own charges, or both? Thanks for the heads up.

Great questions! I think it mostly works with certain smartphones like iPhone and the like, so I don't know if any prepaid phones are available that have the technology for it...I'm sure we could find out, though.

I imagine it would use your minutes, but the charges I think are just the percentage they take of each transaction after you've paid the $1 start-up.

I'm very excited about it. My only concerns are two-fold: 1) How good is the security on the system and 2) what are the processing fees that will be charged for this service ?

The processing fees are posted up above; I'm not sure about the security, to be honest with you. I imagine it's akin to the portable card readers that some vendors use, but of course with it going through cell phones, there might be added risk.
