Do you think that Customer Segmentation can really solve CRM?

Some companies believe that they should spend more of their time satisfying and keeping their best customers at the present time. According to Welcome to E-Commerce Times, posted on the E-Commerce Times site, itís also beneficial for a company to build relationships with their "best-customers-to-be". I also agree that this would benefit your company in the long run.

What is your opinion on Customer Segmentation?

I think there is no doubt you have to treat your existing customers well. You make more on returning customers than new customers. That said, if you are not searching for new customers and treating them well enough to turn them into existing customers, your business won't last.

I think it's important to treat all customers really well, whether they are first-time customers or ones who have been with you a long time. Of course those who have been with you longer are ones that you will have built a relationship with. The first-timers are the ones that you need to set yourself apart from your competitors to. Great customer service can do that along with a great attitude can do that.

What stood out to me in the article was businesses "firing their customers." I can't imagine that. Sure, some customers don't create as many profits, but they're still creating them. How does a business fire a customer, anyway?

New customers bring new life to a business, and that is also very important in this economic climate. Of course it is always good to treat your old customers well also but I do not think you should segregate them as it will just cause problems in the long run.

I believe it is not so much about taking either side of the new and/or old customers but rather making both feel at home. There is no doubt that rapport will exist with old customers. Keep in mind that they were also new at one time.

'Firing customers' would most likely take place indirectly. There are certain things those in business do(mostly unknowingly)that scares away customers.

A good understanding of their preferences and interests is key.

Pan-doo, interesting point but how do you think that data should be gained? Personally, I do not have the time to fill in surveys for companies and there is always going to bias so you never get there true feelings.

As the old saying goes, "Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver and the other gold."

You need your existing customers as a solid base for your business, but without new customers you will never grow. The trick is to grow only as quickly as you can continue to provide quality service.

Another saying goes, "If a customer is happy, he will tell a friend. If he is unhappy, he will tell 10 friends."

This is an interesting thread and topic. I imagine that 'firing' customers involves taking them off mailing lists and the like. Surely it wouldn't go as far as refusing their orders? If you want to eradicate the minnows then raise your minimum order level.
