blog commenting can be good for linking back to your page, however there is an html attribute called no follow which is designed to reduce spam. With this, the link will not effect the ranking on many search engines. This makes it less likely that page rank would be effected. I'm sure you could get many different opinions on this.

A higher page rank for certain key words on a SERP (search engine results page) can be very beneficial in bringing in traffic.

i guess it does, i don't have time commenting on other blogs maybe that's the reason why my blogs does'nt have a pagerank of more than 1 though i've been blogging for years now.
