Anybody have a pet mouse or rat?

Anybody have a pet mouse or rat?
I've always wanted to get a pet mouse or white rat... I haven't looked into how much they cost or how much you need to take care of them (are the messy? do they require lots of care?)...
If anyone has any insight that would be helpful... I was considering getting one for my apartment down at school... Rats are so freaking cool... Most people I know hate rodents cept me...

I want one but my mom won't let me get one. Though I don't really live with her, she's always around and she hates rats.
She says I can just get one from outside. lol
