If you are concerned about getting spammed, then my suggestion would be to set up an email address used only for directory submissions - that way you don't clog up your real email address if you get unlucky.

I haven't had too much trouble with spam from directory submissions - the occasional nag to upgrade to a paid listing, but thats all.

i would recommend using a pseudo id for submissions. the trial and error method will work too. all the best

The worst directory I know of for sending spam is Jade. I have submitted websites to hundreds of directories and I rarely have a problem with being spammed.

I agree with others who said that you should get a different email specifically for directory submissions.

I have not had any problem with directory submission so far and I am not getting any spam either. To be on the safe side I will advise to create a free email address for these purposes.
Let them spam then...

That advice really is right. If you don't want your personal e-mail to be spammed, use a different e-mail for submission purposes.

i have never had any problems either, with spam from directories, the only email i seem to get from them is link submitted, accepted/rejected, and offers, thats it.

I don't know about being used for bad purposes, however I have had directories that just don't index my link because of some other reasons!
