Default Lottery Fraud

I have noticed over the last few months that I have been receiving many emails telling me that I have won the Lottery. Personally I do not do the lottery and I certainly do not do it online.

What confuses me most is how do these people get my email address? What have they to gain by sending me an email that says "You have won €40,000" ?

It would be fantastic to win this amount of money, however I do not do the lottery so I know I have not won it. I always delete these messages, I never open them up however it does make me think, how many people do open up these emails and what damage is it doing to them and their bank balance because obviously they are looking for some sort of money to be handed over to claim the BIG prize.
