Default Top ten scams targeting consumers

On Wednesday, the Office of Fair Trading is launching a campaign to raise awareness of the ways in which people are conned to try to stop this happening.

To coincide with the launch, OFT has identified the top ten scams targeted at UK consumers.

WORK-AT-HOME SCAMS

Work-at-home and business opportunity scams are often advertised as paid work from home.

On application, would-be workers are asked for money up-front to pay for materials and, after payment, hear nothing.

Alternatively, people are asked to invest in a business with little chance of success.

TELEPHONE LOTTERY SCAMS

These include scams which go under the name of genuine lotteries like the Canadian lottery and the El Gordo Spanish lottery.

Telephone
Unsolicited calls tell people they are being entered into a draw

Unsolicited telephone calls tell people they are being entered into a prize draw.

Later, they receive a call congratulating them on winning a substantial prize in a national lottery.

But before they can claim their prize, they are told they must send money to pay for administration fees and taxes.

The prize, of course, does not exist.

Work at home scams is really all over the internet. But I have joined one work at home where I have paid for a registration fee. Though I know that this might be a scam, I was still convinced to join since my friend is a member and she was paid. I am waiting for my check to arrive this month. We'll see if this is a scam. If it is, I'll just charge it to experience.

@dasha101

Is the home thing like those which ask you to refer as many people as you like and then get paid upon the number of referrals ?

I totally agree with you guys. Work -at-home scams are all over the internet and are spreading like wild fire. There are many measure which a person can take to remain safe from scams like these but people rarely follow them.
Work from home scams can be found on the Internet, in classified ads, on telephone pole flyers and in countless other places.
Any one workin from home should always be cautious of scams like these.

Some examples can be :-
"Make $39,000 in less than 30 days from home!"
"You can make $8k+ a month from your computer!"

I have seen a lot of scams regarding Work at Home. And it's surprising to see that people still fall for it.

I definitely have heard about those work at home scams. They will tell you to make an advance payment so that they would know your commitment and that you should not worry cos you will get your money back in a 2 to 3 days when you start your work.
