Default Referral contest fraud

I was part of a referral contest for a webmaster forum site. I don't remember the link but when the contest was over, the webmaster said that he lost the "sponsor" who was supposed to give the money for the contest.

I should've won $300 but at the end didn't get anything.

A lot of time sponsors do choose to pull out but forum owners usually give something. That really sucks. If you remember the link to the site, please share. I wouldn't want to be scammed.

i have seen so many cases of this, thats why i dont really like referral contests or programs, well not unless i know the forum or site or company is big and wont do anything to hurt their reputation.

That's true. This actually happened on my site before. I compensated the winner though.

The problem with contests such as this is that you couldn't do anything about it if the webmaster couldn't pay you for the trouble. I think that it is the webmaster's duty to give something to the winner for the work he'd done; that is if they want to have a good reputation.

well yea same here, back in october of 2006, i ran domain contests where i gave out two free domains to the top posters, worked out well and had happy members

its true you cant do anything if the webmaster wont compensate, well you cant do anything to make him change his mind, but there are lots of things you can do to shut down his site and give him bad reputation, just spread the word, the internet is a big place, fast

Reputation is everything on the internet....Post in other forums (like this one) the url and how bad your experiance was...you could also try contacting the webmaster in a couple weeks just to confirm that this was not a mistake or something he overlooked..

Yes, I've had this experience before. It was very hard to stomach, especially when you spent so much time and effort in promoting the forum, gathering referrals and trying to win the contest.

Havign said that, it can be rather rewarding when the prizes are actually given out though. For instance, I just pocketed $100 2 weeks ago for winning a referral contest at a webmaster forum.

What did the owner do? Try to ask for something in return to what you did.

when owner of the forum doesnt wanted to pay then he wont be paying you whatever you do and if he a genuine/loyal person he is going to pay you atleast something if he has really lost his sponsor! as it is nowadays it has become hard to recognize who's loyal and who's not! better participate in those forums contest which are having good reputation
