You should always be careful when entering forum contest.
Though I must confess that I also held contests on my forum.....

I do pay :P

For problems such as this that sponsors cancel it, webmaster's reputation is at stake. It is hard to justify this. Sometimes things like this really happen. We can't please everybody, some may believe us but others won't. If I were the webmaster, I would just give the winner of the referral contest anything.

But there are also cases that the webmaster just fools the member of his forum. Just to get traffic on the forum he would do things such as this.

When it comes to maintaining forums a good reputation is a must.
Forum owners hit themself when fooling people.

They get a short boost but will fail in long-term.........

Well, the problem is these scammers who hold fraudulent referral contests usually end up selling their forums at handsome profits.
In the end, people like us who helped to boost their forum memberships are the ones who lose out.

He should have at least given you some sort of compensation, despite the loss of sponsorship.

Yeah.. Its not our fault if they lose the sponsors. We did our job and should get paid something in return. Atleast compensation.

I agree as long as you can see that the owner is actually trying to do something about the situation and gives the winner something then either way it is more then the person had before

i am going to assume you are the contest participant, i agree about compensation but it really depends on what the prize is, if its money, they should give out at least partial amount to show good faith that its not their fault, if its a domain and they lost their sponsor and they dont have money, thats trouble -- i ran a domain contest in one of my forums a while ago, sponsored by another forum -- the admin went on vacation and my contest finished, had to buy the domains myself lol, had to use credit card, didnt have paypal

Refferal contest fraud is not uncommon! Almost half of them it seems like are fraud, unless you are a super genius and can sell a million of their products!
