Default $15,000 in prizes

about two years ago i joined this forum, i think it was called webtalksomething or something like that, forgot name -- but their opening contest was that they gave out prizes totaling upto $15,000 -- first place winner got $1000 via paypal and an X-Box

that forum gained popularity, i remember it had almost 1000 members in a month or so and like 50k posts. They sold major advertising space and made money, people assumed thats where they got their money, A day before contest finished, guess what, the site said "page cannot be displayed", I doubt it was just me because i tried it from many other computers, Didnt know anyone on the forum outside of it so no way of knowing.

Just to share some exp with you guys about this.

A while ago on gamerznetwork forums they have a big posting contest where you had to reach 600 <quality> posts before anyone else did to win $1,000 bunch of people had 500 posts. So the thread got deleted about the contest and when asked the admin about it he says "I didn't ever put anything up like that" The forums were either deleted or reinstalled since then but i never went back.

I think that is really sad. People work really hard in these competitions only to find out they have been closed or the board is no more. This happened to me once. I won a refferal competition to win a Nintendo Wii. The owner sold the site just after and said he could not give the prize.

Forum contest have to be looked at carefully. I have been involved in more than one that turns out just to be fraud. I feel they must have a reputation like that or something of lesser value that can be paid out.

Nice, that's because they were just using the content creation as a scape goat! They were just building up posts to move servers and domain names!

It was just a plan to get some good hype bult up so that he could get very high initial traffic for his site. And when his forum was up and running he all together blew the deal. Its very common to have this kind of happening in postings these days.

Referral contests are too good to be true most of the times. I don't get it how a person can afford so many thousands to get non-posting members? Forum posting is good thing though but not paid referrals.

These are classic ways for people to get money from the web. They just attract a lot of people and then when it is time to pay they just disapear.
