    Penny Bids?

I'm a bit late when it comes to eBay. Sure I ordered some things here and there, but I've never been a regular user until recently. Has anyone noticed those odd bids that only require you to bid a penny for the item? What's the purpose of that? I'd partially consider it a scam if only because you normally have to pay for shipping along with that penny, but is there some other reason people are selling items for only a penny?

It's normally things like ebooks and my theory, which may not be correct, is that this is an easy way to accumulate good feedback and a lot of it, in a short space of time!

I have seen a few ebooks up for only a penny, but recently I've searched for Playstation 3 controllers. The one that came with the system broke. Of course I'd enter lowest first, and there are almost 10 controllers there for only a penny! Some are even free shipping, which is quite enticing.

I have always been wary of auctions like that. Sometimes the price seems to good to be true! I always feel like I will be scammed if I bought anything on those sites.

I think some are feedback scammers. Sometimes I've noticed a lot of the penny items originate in other nations, so perhaps they are getting special breaks on fees.

For artistic things, perhaps the lister is just trying to generate interest in their work.

They could either be trying to build their reputation, like others have said, or they secretly have a "reserve" amount and are trying to jack up the price of their item through a bidding war.
