Default PHP vs ASP

According to you which is the best server side scripting language and why?
It seems to me that a lot of website on the net uses ASP but all the web tutorials talk about PHp.

Asp is a proprietary language of Microsoft meaning that you will have to pay to use it while Php is a free language.
It is the battle of paid against free.

Both PHP and ASP (as well as ASP.NET) are server side scripting languages.

The differences are as followed:
-PHP syntax is based on C, while ASP is based on Visual Basic
-ASP is possibly easier to learn compared to PHP
-PHP is open source and free, while ASP is a commercial product
-PHP can be installed on most servers, while ASP is available on IIS (a microsoft product) usually

*ASP and ASP.NET is available on IIS (for free), which is already installed in Windows XP (and Windows Vista).

PHP is the best programming language. Because it is powerful, free hence available on all web hosting servers, availability of a large number of open source scripts, availability of a large user community ready to help you.

I agree with you that PHp is the best language and above all it is free if you are on a budget.
I prefer it to ASP.

What ever happened to Perl, I love perl. I think people have gravitated to PHP because it's so easy but nothing beats perl
