I use VBulletin for the wesbites I use for long-term ranking. I use fully modded PHPBB for adsense sites with forums. I love VBulletin but consider the price too steep for sites that do not earn enough to justify the cost, it eats too much into my profits.

Vbulletin is the best for me, I run an outstanding forum off of it right now and wouldn't get anything else.

Hi,
Well to say about the forums I will say the paid one is surely V bulletin.

And to say about the free forum software It is MYBB.
And I don't know whether I will be sticking to these or not........

Another one that I like is Phorum. Most of the things that you've come to like with PHPbb and the others needs an add on to be there, but this makes it run really quickly and lightly out of the box.

Most forum software does about the same thing. The thing is to find one with the themes and add ons that you want.

phpBB is user-friendly, which counts most in a retired-expat community. People are used to it, can handle it easily. Apart from that, there are upgrades available which include more features by the time. phpBB3 for example seems to have just about all features. phpBB2 can be upgraded to it, when it is finally released. Members can get used to it slowly, no need to use all new features. It will not be completely different software.

New forums have the problem of attracting new members, if they use software not common to their target group. Building up your forum first with quality content does not depend upon the features but more upon people being familiar with the software.

Spam-robots are certainly a problem. The visual confirmation check is about useless, hopefully improved at phpBB3. But at MyBB it does not only keep Spam-robots away but also people who give up after a few unsuccessful attempts.

If you haven't got much time, and want to see what the new phpbb3 can offer, just try it out on this host : free forum

Hope this can help!

vBulletin is the best forum software available today but its too expensive, still VB is my favourite among the paid once.

In free MYBB is my favourite, I have tried Phpbb3 also but liked MyBB over it.
