Default Best Text Editor?

I used to use a text editor called Edit Pad Pro - it had great search and replace, syntax highlighting, and regular expressions support. It was ideal for most coding / programing and editing work.

I've lost the license key, and I'm not sure whether I should rebuy it, or if there are now better tools out there.

What text editors do you use? I'd love to hear some recommendations.

I use Ubuntu Linux and there are two text editors I regularly use:

1. gedit
A simple, Gnome based text editor like notepad but with far more features like syntax highlighting and plugin support.

2. vi
My editor of choice when dealing with config files or when I have to work on a terminal.

I am using HTML kit, this is free. It helps me a lot of with my codes. It is rich in plug-ins, around 400 I guess. You can also use Scite. This is the favorite of my friend.

I usually stick with the old "notepad" standby when I connected thru "Smart Cup" FTP service.
