Default How to aviod collection agencies

My grandmother has been getting hit with collection agencies lately even though she has paid the bill and has proof of paying to bill. Is there a way that my poor old grandma can get some relief?

Next time the agency calls, give them some sort of proof. There is usually a receipt number after paying a bill, give them the specific date and the total amount. Have her call the bank and see if they received the money... if they havn't, maybe it got lost in the mail?

Get their address and send them a certified letter, return receipt requested stating that they may no longer contact you. They can call one more time after that and then they must cease contact, as stated in the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

Make copies of the payments made and send it with a letter explaining that it has been paid. Make sure to keep the original documents.

If they do not accept this then I would contact the Citizen Advice Bureau and they will be ale to assist her, they can recommend what she can do or they can put her in touch with some legal advice.

You sound like you are confident and would be able to deal with these people, maybe you could make an appointment with them and bring in the proof of payment and don't leave until they accept that your Grandmother has paid.

Write a strong worded letter and let them realize their incompetencies or call, rant and shout at them for the same reason. They should realize that they are sleeping on their job.

You should inform the concerned authorities and hand them the application containing the complaint, summary and receipt numbers with their photocopies.

If you live in a state where the collection agencies have to have a license then you can make a complaint.

Indeed, you can make a complaint, but only do so if you do have the receipts to back it up. Otherwise, you're just whining...
