Default Some tips to stop Fraud on your card

Don't let anyone swipe your card twice without giving you a 'transaction cancelled' receipt for the first swipe - card 'skimming' is growing where fraudsters swipe cards through a second machine to record details.
Be on your guard when withdrawing money from ATMs - if anything seems out of place with the machine or people around you, don't transact. Check particularly for small skimming devices placed over the card slot.
Hang onto ATM receipts as proof of your transactions.
When buying over the Internet, deal only with reputable online merchants whose sites offer full security. Check for the padlock symbol at the bottom of your web browser.
A good point to always look out for is when you are in a restaurant don't let the waiter take your credit card away always make sure you are present when your card is swiped. Friends of mine let the waiter take there card and unbeknown to them the card had been put through another swip machine that took all the details of their account.

I see that you say dont let anyone swipe your card twice. But the debt machines break and dont work as well as they should so sometimes it takes more then 1 swipe for it to work. I guess it really only matters if you live in a big city were that has happend. The only way ill ever pay online is with paypal and ticketmaster. Never will i give out my CC details other then that.

Default Other tips to prevent fraud.

Plus keep a close eye on your account - you should be able to check online. I keep my ATM receipts until the deposit has cleared, which is not always immediately or within a day or so, especially if you have had trouble on the account (bounced a check, or something along those lines.)

Find out now what occurs if something happens to your card. My Dad once lost his card after withdrawing from an ATM. All the bank would tell him is that they will send him another card. They never mentioned freezing the account (it's a joint one with my Mom), or changing numbers, any of the ideas that immediately came to my mind.

Also, as a warning, I would have accounts at more than one bank. Legally, if you have a loan or large payment, a bank can automatically take the money in your account and any savings account you have with them to pay it? This was on the news some years ago - a couple bought a truck and were late with the loan payment. They paid, but it didn't hit that account in time; the reason was a legitimate one that I have forgotten.

The bank cleared out not only their checking account, but their savings as well, without authorization. The couple did not have an agreement with the bank to pull money out of their savings when necessary, as has been suggested.

Since then, I keep a checking and one savings account in one bank, and several savings accounts in another. We are considering moving, and if we do, I may open a savings account or two in the bank that then will be closest to us. I have not decided yet.

Yeah, sometimes you need to swipe the card twice, but thanks for pointing out that issue, I'm sure many people out there might now be aware of such frauds. I'll get the transaction canceled receipt, before the second wipe.
