Rep Power: 2 ![]() | Debit cards do not help your credit, but they do help you keep your checking account on the positive side. I use a debit card instead of personal checks because I am horribe with Math. If the debit card doesn't work, I know my personal checking is empty. And by keeping my checking account positive for 2 years, it also helped my credit due to the bank also granting me a savings account and credit card. I followed a plan outlined by my bank, that helped me get myself on my feet again after years of not being able to even get a checking account. So in a round about way, yes it can help your credit if your credit is really bad, like a past bankruptcy still on your record as in my case. (and bad math so a history of bounced checks and even one arrest for a check you didn't know bounced is on your record due to an ex going happy crazy with your checks and credit) But it doesn't help your credit report if you already have good credit. |

However, your protection in using debit cards is limited compared to the protection you derive as a credit card holder. For instance, requesting for a chargeback thru your debit card provider may be a futile exercise since you spend your own money. |
