Default How to tell if a site is legit

I was wondering if you guys have surefire ways of telling if a merchant site is legitimate. I always look for the little lock in the corner of the browser, but sometimes when I want to order something on a site that's not really well known, I wonder if the merchant is going to use my credit card number. How can you guys tell?

If you are on a secure site then you will notice that the URL in the addressbar changes to HTTPS where extra S means "secure". Only trusted sites have such a security mechanism.

Most big sites uses security padlock, so if you se Https instead of Http then it means it is secure, also it will show a small golden lock in bottom bar of your browser.

I have been ordering merchandise off the web for a few years now. I never thought to see if it is secure. If there's a number I usually give them a call. (especially if a credit card is involved. Most sites give you that option.)

You should also look to see whether the padlock is in the browser or on the page itself.there are a lot of sites that are cheating like this.

Always install Antivirus and anti-spywares because they can redirect you to fake site even if you type correct URL. Also check for https and security lock in underneath toolbar.

There are sites that can get fke security certificates, so if you click on the lock it should tell you who issued the certificate. I believe most of them lead back to verisign.

One way to check the legitimacy of an online shop is by scrutinizing its WHOIS profile. A legitimate merchant should have its business address and phone number which you yourself can verify.

Best thing to do is research the web on a site and see testimonials and things like that.
