    Involving the police

I just heard from someone that chargebacks are considered civil law infringements and therefore you can't involve the police. Can this be true? I would have thought fraud was a criminal offence for sure. (Presuming here that the claim is fake/unwarranted.)

I think that if it is proven to be fraud, that some police departments have special units dedicated to fraud, identity theft, online banking, etc. It depends on where you are, though. I know that where I am I wouldn't expect the local police to do anything about any online transactions.

I think its false. I heard of a case where police was involved and an arrest was made.

There has to be sufficient evidence to charge someone with a crime. I would think it is hard to prove that the chargebacks are intentional. They would probably have to have a criminal record and have plenty of chargebacks. The DA would have to be willing to pick up the case as well.

I think redhanded is right. The police would not get involved without sufficient evidence that the chargebacks were intentional fraud. That would be hard to prove without a history of other fraudulent behavior. Still, would filing a report, even if no charges were brought, help in the future or would a conviction be necessary?
