    Digital signatures?

When someone is selling a product such as software that they download rather than receive in the mail, digital signatures are often thought to offer some protection to the merchant. Yet they often don't hold up in a chargeback case. This seems unfair to me.

    Re: Digital signatures?

The concept of digital signatures is still new to me. Nonetheless, I agree that they should be able to protect the merchant(s). To what extent are these signatures able to offer protection?

    Re: Digital signatures?

Well, a digital signature and an electronic signature are two completely different things. A digital signature is a mathematical scheme which allows your computer to know it is talking to the correct host. An electronic signature is where you sign an electronic document by means of sound, symbol or process.

Electronic signatures are recognised by law, however the problems come in when asked "Is it your signature" because there is no way to prove it.

Digital signature is something new and I believe it will take off in few years without our notice because of ubiquitous mobile devices are these days. . Therefor, it should hold up in chargeback cases.

I think a lot of people probably use the two terms interchangeably. I'm not sure how valid either is in legal terms but this article is quite interesting regarding this topic and chargebacks.

This is a good way to secure merchants but it is still on its infant stage so we have to wait for improvements. More and more phones are becoming touch screens and one day most monitors will be touch screen as well for everyone to sign in, literally.

I personally think that the classic signature is a bit outdated in this day and age. Instead every computer should have a "unique" signature to sign with?

    Re: Digital signatures?

Digital Signatures sound to me like a way to track the IP address or such of the purchaser and yes I would think that it should hold up in court also. I do believe that this may be part of the unique signature that Priceless is talking about. It just isn't quite as high tech yet.
