Thread: Retail vs Online

I started this topic just to find out what you guys think of the disadvantage online businesses are at in terms of chargebacks. I have noticed that for a retail business they can swipe your card and even get your signature on a sheet which is all hard to dispute in the case of a chargeback. Now none of this is available to online retailers, so what do you guys do to help prevent chargebacks?

Of course we are all at a disadvantage if we do business online but I believe that if we take some simple steps we can minimize chargebacks as much as possible.

That's a good and useful article, thanks for sharing. I like the idea of accepting your customer's request for a part of refund to avoid an unnecessary chargeback. It's new to me.

I agree it's an interesting article. I liked the idea of emailing and letting the customer know the name which will appear on their credit card statement. I've been confused by this myself before now and I can understand how people may panic and make what I call a reflex chargeback.

Stewie, is a reflex chargeback when people do it without thinking it through? I never thought about people having made so many purchases on a credit card that they don't remember each one! (Probably because I use mine very rarely.) Sorry to hijack the thread but why would the company name on the credit card statement be different from the name on the website?

I personally sometimes can't keep track of my debit card. That's why I now write everything I spend down and if I can't remember something I will go and ask the bank (and look like a fool when I remember).

The best thing to do is ask your bank if you do not remember a transaction and they will give you more information on it which will hopefully jog your memory.
