I read an online tip page about how to avoid chargebacks and one thing mentioned was to not give out the tracking number to the customer. They refused to say why - presumably to avoid copycats - so does anyone know how this may protect the seller?

I can only guess it's so the seller can't deliberately try to base a charge back based on prior to it arriving, but that is foolhardy advice. The fact is, if a buyer goes to chargeback because an item didn't arrive, it works in your favor at a customer level and an appeal level to have provided a tracking number. Legitimate customers who may not understand tracking times may file a chargeback if the item doesn't arrive, but hold off it they know the item has been shipped and can track it. In the appeals process, if you can prove that you provided the information to the customer it can assist you in your case that the customer knew or had access to proof that the item was shipped, and when it should have arrived.
