    Company ceasing trading

    Hi all.

I don't know very much about chargebacks and would be grateful for some advice.

I deposited 40 using my Barclay's Connect (Visa Debit) card with an online bookmaker based in Malta. I received a welcome bonus from the bookmaker of 40. I placed a few bets and managed to increase my balance. Then, the bookmaker ceased trading due to liquidity problems.

I believe, like me, a number of clients have funds tied up with this bookmaker which they cannot access. I have written several times to the Malta Lotteries and Gaming Authority who regulate this bookmaker demanding to know what they are doing about this. My e-mails go unanswered.

I find the whole situation totally unacceptable; as far as I am concerned the bookmaker is stealing my money and the regulator is doing nothing about it. The bookmaker was continuing to make sign-up offers right up until they ceased trading and others will have fallen victim to them.

Is there any possibility that I could recover my initial deposit of 40 as it was made by Visa debit card? I appreciate that any bonus and proceeds of my activity could never be recovered in this way, but the deposit would, at least, be something. Does anyone have any experience of such a situation and can they offer any advice? Thanks.

Debit cards provide very little protection in their limits. If it’s been over a week, sometimes less, you have very little protection on that debit card. Credit cards on the other hand have a much longer period of protection. I would suggest that you contact the Barclay's and if they are unable to assist you, then contact a chargeback specialist @ +1 (212) 751-6213.

I would speak to Barclays about the possibility of raising a chargeback. At the end of the day, the merchant is not there to defend the chargeback so there is a good chance you would win if Barclays were willing to proceed. It is also worth looking into the company further to see if they were actively looking to de-fraud people. It might be worth googling the company name to see whether you were just unlucky or there are other people in your position. Either way, I would speak to Barclays.

Sometimes the card association regulations do not allow them to defend the cardholder in cases where the card has been used for online gambling. I'd check with your bank.
