Thread: Making a career out of chargebacks

I know that some people make chargebacks as a matter of course, keeping the goods they receive and basically getting a double payoff. Do you think there are people out there who see this as a career? It's like virtual shop lifting in my opinion - and I know people do that week in and week out!

Maybe this could be a lucrative sideline for someone so inclined. I can't see how you could make enough from it to consider it a career. I'm sure many people who make frequent chargebacks don't think they are in the wrong - but to do it full time would be crossing a line perhaps.

how so? Do their credit cards keep track of how many chargebacks they've done and limit them?

I hope not. I would think there is some kind of system in place that if your credit card company sees alot of chargebacks in a period of time that will raise a flag. Im sure there are people out that who have tried that. People will try to take advantage of anything if they think they can get away with it.

well most people have multiple credit cards and you can do 3 or 4 chargebacks before anything happens. so it'll be easy to do this all year long.

I don't think you could really get away with doing that for very long. Not unless you went through the trouble of aquiring multiple identities.

I can't see how this would work. Surely credit card companies would investigate or at least contact you if there were frequent chargebacks going through your account. I can see your card getting cancelled as a result if it happened too often.

I don't think the credit card companies doing anything about this because they want people to use their cards often. They have no incentive to stop the user since they are not liable anyway and just end up passing the costs to merchants. I know some companies keep internal lists of chargeback histories, so that might help. A company like Vindicia, which fights chargebacks for merchants, might have their internal lists as well. Too bad companies are coming together to share that black list. But then again, one person's frauster might be another's good customer.
