When I went through my stage of not wanting to have a credit card, I thought I could get away with using just the statement for emergencies. Because it can be so easy to get someone's statement, or write down a number, my information had to be verified by a manager every time I bought something. It was a pain in the tailbone, to say the least.
I finally called the company, after emailing several times with no response, and ordered another card. The customer service person explained to me what was going on and why I had to be verified each time - it was because I did not have the physical card. Received the card, used it, and all works perfectly.
This was a store card, so I am not sure if you have or can get such protection on MasterCard, AmEx, Discover, and so forth.
